Black Lives Matter, Street mural in Capitol Hill, Seattle, US.
The Black Lives Matter mural stretches across 75 meters on Pine Street between 10th and 11th avenues in Capitol Hill. The text consists of 16 large letters, each about 6 meters tall, created by different local artists working in their own styles.
The mural appeared in June 2020 during the Capitol Hill Occupied Protest, when local artists quickly responded to nationwide demonstrations following a fatal incident. The community used this rapid artistic action to create a powerful public statement.
Each letter displays the personal artistic voice of a different creator, with designs showing Black identity, heritage, and social justice through varied styles and visual languages.
The mural sits on an active street where the city has introduced special measures to keep pedestrians safe. Visitors should be mindful when photographing or viewing the artwork, as foot traffic remains consistent throughout the day.
The artwork came together in less than two days from the moment the idea started, showing how quickly the movement mobilized. This rapid creation led to the formation of an artist network that continues working together on projects.
