Built in 1907, the structure was designed following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which prompted stronger seismic safety practices on the West Coast. These updated construction standards shaped how buildings were built throughout the region.
The Central Building hosted the first meetings of the Port of Seattle commission in 1911, establishing its role in maritime administration development.
The building underwent major renovations between 2002 and 2007 that updated its systems and facilities. Historical details were kept intact throughout this work to maintain the structure's character for modern office use.
