Garfield High School, Public high school in Central District, Seattle, US
Garfield High School is a large Jacobean-style building at 400 23rd Avenue, between East Alder and East Jefferson Streets in Seattle. The school serves roughly 1,600 students and features modern facilities that were integrated during a major renovation between 2006 and 2008.
The school was founded in 1920 and originally called East High School before being renamed in 1926. The new name honors James A. Garfield, the 20th President of the United States.
The school shapes the neighborhood through its students, who bring many different backgrounds and stories. The building itself serves as a gathering place for the local community and reflects the diversity that has defined Seattle over many generations.
The campus is less publicly accessible during school hours, but the architecture can be viewed from outside. Visitors should note the location in the Central District, where public transportation is readily available.
The building retains its original appearance from the 1920s with many Jacobean architectural details intact. During renovation, these historical elements were carefully preserved while modern systems were hidden within the structure.
