Montecito is a residential community between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County, California. The settlement stretches along the coast with Mediterranean architecture, private estates and manicured gardens that reach into the hills.
The area was originally inhabited by Chumash Indians before Spanish colonists took over the region in the 18th century. Italian immigrants developed agriculture and citrus plantations from the 1860s onward, shaping the appearance of the community.
Casa del Herrero was completed in 1925 and shows Spanish Colonial architecture with original furnishings and gardens open to the public. The Music Academy of the West has trained young artists since 1947 in a seaside campus and hosts regular concerts for visitors.
Several beaches like Butterfly Beach are accessible by foot or car and allow dogs on leash throughout the year. The best time for sunsets runs from spring to autumn, when weather is mild and visibility often clear.
The community sits on a geological fault line that occasionally causes minor earthquakes but also produces hot springs. Some historic estates feature private railway tracks once used to transport citrus fruit to the coast.
