Moran Dam, Arch dam near Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada
Moran Dam is a proposed arch dam project on the Fraser River in British Columbia. The structure was designed to rise approximately 260 meters and span nearly 1 kilometer across the river to generate hydroelectric power.
The British Columbia government approved initial construction work in 1955 for this hydroelectric venture. The project was abandoned in the early 1970s due to financial constraints and shifting priorities affecting its development.
The Fraser River's preservation following the cancellation of Moran Dam in 1972 maintains the natural migration patterns of Pacific salmon populations.
The site is located near Lillooet in a mountainous section of the Fraser River Canyon. Visitors should note this is an unbuilt project, so there is no actual structure visible at the location today.
The project would have created one of North America's largest reservoirs with a capacity exceeding 35 billion cubic meters of water. This enormous volume would have fundamentally transformed the region and represented one of the era's most ambitious hydroelectric plans.
