Meadows Field Airport, airport in Oildale, California, USA

Meadows Field Airport, also known by its code BFL, sits about 3 miles northwest of Downtown Bakersfield in California. The facility features a modern terminal with six gates, two runways, and space for roughly 190 aircraft including passenger planes, small private planes, and cargo aircraft.

The airport was founded in 1926 to meet the growing need for air travel in the region. During World War II, the U.S. Army Air Force used it for pilot training and aircraft testing before it returned to civilian use in 1945.

The airport is named after Cecil Meadows, a key figure in its early operations. For many residents of Bakersfield, it serves as a familiar gateway where business travel and homecomings connect people to their daily routines.

The airport is easily reached by car via Highway 99 and offers both short-term and long-term parking options. Bus stops are located nearby, and taxi and ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are available to simplify arrival and departure.

The airport served as a military training site during World War II where night fighter pilots were trained. Today, most of those historical military aircraft are preserved in museums, making the wartime legacy visible only through historical records and old military hangars.
