June Lake, Mountain resort in Mono County, United States
June Lake sits in the eastern Sierra Nevada at about 2,330 meters elevation and is one of four lakes in a chain within Inyo National Forest. The water stretches across several kilometers with rocky coves along the shore and forested slopes descending toward it.
Development as a destination began in the early 1900s when fishermen discovered the abundance of Lahontan cutthroat trout and made the area attractive for anglers. This early fishing culture shaped it into a popular mountain retreat.
The lake has long been home to the Paiute people, who relied on its fish and resources. Today, visitors can sense this heritage along the shores and understand the strong connection local communities maintained with the water.
Two marinas provide boat access, and several campgrounds scatter around the lake for overnight stays. The area offers year-round activities, with hiking trails in summer and the June Mountain Ski Area for winter sports.
The water reaches depths exceeding 50 meters, making it one of the deeper lakes in the region. This depth supports diverse fish populations and makes it a destination for varied recreational pursuits year-round.
