Black Mountain, Mountain summit in Las Vegas Valley, Nevada
Black Mountain is a summit in the McCullough Range southeast of Las Vegas that rises to about 5,100 feet. The peak features steep rocky slopes with multiple trails winding through natural desert terrain and exposures of layered stone.
The summit has served as a broadcasting hub for decades, with transmission towers installed to relay television and radio signals across the Las Vegas region. This infrastructure made the location strategically important for regional communications.
The mountain gained recognition in gaming culture through its appearance in Fallout: New Vegas as a transmission station. This connection has drawn video game fans who want to visit the actual location.
The hike to the summit is challenging and involves scrambling over rocks in several sections. Plan to start early in the day, bring plenty of water, and watch for uneven ground and slippery surfaces after rain.
The northern slope is studded with multiple communication towers that are visible from far away and dominate the view from the summit. This unusual blend of infrastructure and desert wilderness creates an unexpected contrast on the peak.
