Camp préhistorique de Chassey-le-Camp, Archaeological site in Chassey-le-Camp, France

Camp Chassey is a prehistoric settlement sprawling across 9 hectares on a sloping plateau, bordered by earth and stone ramparts extending about 750 meters long and 230 meters wide. The site contains remains of dwellings and scattered artifacts from the early farming cultures that inhabited the area.

The settlement flourished about 6000 years ago when early farming cultures began establishing permanent villages in the region. Systematic excavations starting in 1865 unearthed thousands of stone tools and artifacts that revealed the daily life of these first agricultural communities.

This settlement gave its name to an entire prehistoric culture that shaped the region. The dwelling foundations scattered across the site show how families organized their living spaces during the early farming period.

The site is accessible via the GR7 hiking trail and features informational panels throughout to guide visitors. The well-marked route makes it easy to explore the plateau and understand the layout of the ancient settlement.

Pottery fragments found during excavations show traces of beeswax, revealing that residents practiced beekeeping thousands of years before modern times. This makes the site one of the earliest known sources of evidence for honey harvesting in Europe.
