Château de Rully

Château de Rully is a fortified castle set on a hillside featuring four towers connected by defensive walls. The buildings display oak woodwork and roofing with Burgundian tiles visible throughout the structure and covered passages.

The fortress first appeared in written records during the 9th century and came under the control of the Rully family in the 12th century. Its appearance shifted over time as it transitioned between purely military use and residential occupation.

The castle blends military strength with residential comfort in its rooms and passages. Walking through, you notice how defensive stone walls gradually give way to more comfortable living spaces added over time.

Access to the castle requires joining a guided tour that takes you through the barrel-vaulted rooms and wooden corridors. Plan to wear comfortable shoes since the route covers multiple levels and outdoor areas of the grounds.

The castle has remained in the hands of the Montessus family without interruption since the 17th century. This makes it a rare example of a private property that has stayed within one family across so many generations.
