Roccapina Lion, Natural rock formation on Corsica coast, France

Roccapina Lion is a natural rock formation perched on a cliff along Corsica's coast, shaped by erosion into a sitting lion facing the Mediterranean Sea. The structure displays clear granite features including a mane, facial details, and a distinct body position.

Medieval fortifications were built atop the rock formation, with ancient walls still visible at the summit today. These structures demonstrate the strategic value of this location for controlling and monitoring the Corsican coast.

The granite formation serves as a landmark that locals have long woven into their stories and used as a navigation reference point. People visiting today can see how this natural shape has become part of the region's identity and memory.

The site is reached by a hiking trail of around four kilometers from Roccapina beach, with a steady climb of several hundred meters in elevation. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring water, while planning the visit time based on daylight and coastal conditions.

The rock strata display natural patterns that recreate surprisingly precise details of a lion's mane, face, and body posture. These accidental patterns created by erosion are distinctive enough that visitors immediately notice the resemblance.
