Salt Palace, former arena in Salt Lake City
The Salt Palace was a large multipurpose arena in downtown Salt Lake City with modern design and a roof covering the entire space. The building seated over 12,000 spectators and featured wide open areas with clean lines that provided comfortable views of events from most seats.
The arena opened in 1969 and hosted the Utah Jazz from 1979 until 1991, before the team moved to a newer facility. The building was also home to other professional teams and saw use until the early 1990s, when it was eventually demolished.
The Salt Palace served as a gathering place where the community came together for games, concerts, and events. The arena shaped generations of residents and created shared memories among local fans and visitors.
The arena was located downtown near West Temple Street and was easily accessible on foot from nearby hotels, restaurants, and other attractions. The building featured ramps and accessible seating options to make visits comfortable for all guests.
The arena was the site of a tragic event in January 1991 when three teenagers were killed in a crowd surge at an AC/DC concert. This incident led to important discussions about safety at large-scale events.
