Qu 12, Military ruins at Baie des Trépassés, France
Qu 12 is a World War II military bunker on the cliffs overlooking Baie des Trépassés, made of reinforced concrete with observation posts built into the rockface. The structure contains several chambers and passages that show how soldiers lived and communicated during wartime operations.
German forces built this defensive structure in the early 1940s as part of the Atlantic Wall coastal defense line. The bunker was damaged at the end of the war and now stands partially destroyed on the cliff face.
The structure stands as a memorial site where local residents share stories about the occupation period with visiting history students.
You can reach the ruins by following coastal paths that start from parking areas near Baie des Trépassés, accessible throughout the year. The final approach to the structure requires careful footing as the terrain is rocky and exposed to wind.
Visitors can still see parts of the original observation equipment, including metal brackets and remains of communication systems from wartime. These artifacts reveal details about daily soldier life at this isolated coastal post.
