Muskrat Falls

Muskrat Falls is a waterfall on the Churchill River where water drops over two distinct sections separated by rapids and an intermediate stretch of river. The falls lie along the terrain formed by the Manitu-utshu Hill.

In the early 1900s, a lumber company recognized the waterfall's power potential and began planning dam projects. The site eventually became a hydroelectric facility that began operation in 2020.

The transformation of Muskrat Falls into a hydroelectric facility has raised concerns among Innu communities regarding land use and environmental preservation.

The site can be reached through local trails and access points with information available at regional visitor centers. Sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate clothing are important, as riverbank conditions can change.

A sonar search in 2010 detected a 30-meter object in the riverbed, sparking speculation about a German submarine from World War II.
