The Pinery Provincial Park, Nature reserve and provincial park near Lake Huron, Canada
The Pinery Provincial Park is a nature reserve and provincial park on the shores of Lake Huron in Lambton County, Ontario. Sand dunes stretch along the waterfront and transition inland to forested wetland areas crossed by several walking trails.
The government of Ontario established the park in 1957 to protect the coastal dunes and the species living there. Over the following decades additional areas were placed under protection and the trail network expanded.
The name recalls the vast pine forests that once covered this stretch of shoreline. Today families return each summer to swim and hike, while winter brings cross-country skiers who trace trails through the dunes.
Campgrounds sit near the beach or deeper in the forest, allowing each visitor to choose the setting they prefer. Those planning to ski should bring warm layers, as wind off the lake often blows cold.
The old channel of the Ausable River flows through the interior and forms a separate waterway cut off from the open shore. Paddlers use this calmer route to watch birds and other wildlife that gather along its banks.
