Partridge Island, Quarantine facility on Partridge Island, Saint John, Canada
The 24-acre island at Saint John Harbor entrance contains a lighthouse, military fortifications, and a former quarantine station connected by a stone breakwater.
The immigration station processed 30,000 people during the 1840s Irish Potato Famine, with many succumbing to a typhus epidemic on the grounds.
The Mi'kmaq people named the island Quak'm'kagan'ik, meaning a piece cut out, based on their traditional story of its creation.
The island remains closed to public access since 1995 due to soil contamination and requires infrastructure development for future tourism.
The island housed the first steam-operated fog alarm system in the world, invented by Robert Foulis in 1859 for maritime navigation.
