Reversing Falls Bridge, Road bridge in Saint John, Canada

Reversing Falls Bridge is a steel arch structure spanning the Saint John River toward the Bay of Fundy, with two traffic lanes and pedestrian walkways on each side. The structure sits where river water and tidal forces meet, creating a visually striking display of natural power.

The original crossing was built in 1853 and replaced in 1915 with the current steel structure following engineering advances of the era. This replacement provided a safer and more durable passage over the turbulent river section.

The bridge offers a viewing position where people gather to watch the natural reversal of river currents caused by tidal changes. This phenomenon is deeply connected to local identity and draws visitors who want to experience the power of the tides firsthand.

The bridge is part of Route 100 and vehicles can cross toll-free while moving between eastern and western sections of the city. Pedestrians can use the walkways to view the water reversal from above, especially during tidal changes.

Water beneath the bridge shifts dramatically by roughly 8.5 meters with each tidal cycle as the Bay of Fundy and the river swap flow directions. These extreme water level changes rank among the most pronounced tidal effects anywhere.
