Forêt Montmorency, Research forest in Quebec, Canada
Forêt Montmorency is an experimental forest in the Laurentian Mountains with four lakes spread across roughly 400 square kilometers. The terrain ranges from 600 to 1000 meters in elevation and is operated by Laval University for research and education.
Laval University acquired the forest through a long-term lease from the Quebec government in 1964. The original area has been expanded significantly since its founding and now serves as a major hub for forest research.
The site is managed by the Faculty of Forestry and Geomatics as a place where students and researchers learn about northern forests. You can observe how scientists study the boreal ecosystem through ongoing field work and educational programs.
Access to the area requires a permit obtained through the university website. The site offers winter activities including cross-country skiing with equipment rentals available on location.
The forest receives more than 1500 millimeters of annual rainfall and maintains an average temperature around 0.5 degrees Celsius. These particular conditions make it valuable for understanding how boreal forests function in harsh climates.
