Grand Valley Institution for Women, women's prison
Grand Valley Institution for Women is a federal correctional facility in Kitchener, Ontario that opened in 1997 and houses approximately 215 women. The institution operates with three security levels, offering residential-style accommodations for minimum and medium security residents while maintaining separate maximum security units.
The facility opened in January 1997 and has operated for more than 25 years as a women-only correctional institution. The land it occupies is traditional territory of several Indigenous groups including the Mississauga Attiwonderonk, Anishinabewaki, and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, covered by historical treaties.
