Samnaunerstrasse, road in Switzerland
Samnaunerstrasse is a paved road outside settlements in Grisons that winds through mountainous terrain. The route passes through narrow valleys, climbs steep elevation changes, and uses several tunnels to navigate challenging alpine passages.
The road was completed in 1912 and connected the isolated village of Samnaun to the Swiss road network. It arose from the need to make the remote mountain region more accessible and to promote economic development.
The road is passable for small vehicles and limited bus service but is frequently blocked by snow and avalanches in winter. Visitors should prepare for changeable mountain weather and check road conditions before traveling.
A modern tunnel was built in 2018 to replace an older, more dangerous section and avoid rockfalls and avalanches. The area around Acla da Fans also features a tax-free shopping zone with restaurants and a gas station, where visitors can purchase alcohol, perfumes, and cosmetics at lower prices.
