Villa Belvoir, Neoclassical mansion and park in Enge, Switzerland
Villa Belvoir is a neoclassical mansion on Wyssbühel hill featuring three floors and established gardens with flower beds and numerous North American tree species. The carefully designed parkland spreads across the grounds, connecting different areas together.
Heinrich Escher purchased the land in 1826 and had the villa built between 1828 and 1831, reshaping the hillside for the estate. The construction was part of a period when Zurich's wealthy developed grand properties on the city's outskirts.
The property has housed a hotel management school since 1925, where students run a public restaurant on the grounds. Visitors can dine here while experiencing education in action within a historic setting.
The grounds offer accessible paths throughout the property, connecting the flower gardens, vegetable beds, and historic tree collections. Visitors can explore comfortably and easily move between the different garden zones at their own pace.
The estate lost its direct access to Lake Zurich in 1872 when the lakeside railway was built, creating a permanent barrier. What was once waterfront land became separated from the shore by the railway tracks.
