Worb new château, Manor house in Worb, Switzerland
Worb new château is an elegant manor house with symmetrical facades and architectural elements typical of 18th-century Switzerland. The structure displays the classical proportions and details that defined residences of wealthy families during that period.
Franz Ludwig von Graffenried commissioned this manor between 1734 and 1737 and hired Bernese architect Albrecht Stürler to design it. The building was later renovated by the same family and remained in their ownership across generations.
The house reflects how wealthy Bernese families of the 18th century chose to design their homes and what architectural forms mattered to them. You can see from the symmetrical facade and refined details how much these families valued beauty and order.
The manor is privately owned and not accessible to visitors, so it can only be viewed from outside. The best time to see the architecture is during daylight hours when the facade is well illuminated.
The building has been inhabited by the von Graffenried family since 1985 and was extensively renovated at that time to preserve its historical character. This long-term care by the original owning family has helped keep the historical substance well maintained.
