Monte Zucchero, Mountain summit in Ticino, Switzerland

Monte Zucchero is a mountain summit in the Lepontine Alps between Bignasco and Sonogno, characterized by grassy slopes and rock formations. The peak marks a natural divide between two valleys and provides hikers with varied terrain throughout the climb.

The name 'Zuccar' comes from the Lombard language, reflecting the linguistic heritage of this border region between Italian-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland. Traditional use by farmers and herders shaped this mountain area across many generations.

The mountainside is dotted with traditional stone houses where local herders have long kept goats on seasonal pastures. These buildings show how people have adapted to life in this alpine valley over time.

The climb is demanding and requires sturdy footwear, plenty of water, and physical preparation. Start early in the day and be prepared for changing mountain weather conditions.

The mountain sits south of Passo di Redorta with a prominence of roughly 550 meters. This prominence makes it a notable reference point in the local alpine landscape.
