Former dominican convent of St. Catherine, Dominican monastery complex in St. Gallen, Switzerland.
The former Dominican convent of St. Catherine is a late Gothic complex with a church and cloister in St. Gallen. The historical structures display the typical monastic layout with functional spaces arranged around a central courtyard.
The monastery began in 1228 as an Augustinian establishment and was converted to a Dominican convent in 1368. Religious activity ceased following the Reformation in 1555.
The convent served as a center for learning and scholarship within the city for centuries. The spaces still reflect this monastic tradition through their plain design for work and contemplation.
The convent is located centrally in St. Gallen's old town and is easily reached on foot. Visitors should check opening hours in advance as they are limited and irregular.
A major fire in 1418 destroyed much of the complex, but the community carefully rebuilt it. The architecture retains traces of this reconstruction in its Gothic details.
