Rosengart Collection, Art museum in central Lucerne, Switzerland.
The Rosengart Collection is an art museum in central Lucerne, housed in a former bank building, with works by Pablo Picasso and Paul Klee at its core. The displays span three floors and cover paintings, drawings, watercolors, and photographs from the 20th century.
Siegfried Rosengart began buying works directly from artists in the 1930s and maintained a close personal friendship with Pablo Picasso over many decades. His daughter Angela continued building the collection alongside him, and they opened it to the public in 2002.
Paul Klee grew up in Switzerland and spent much of his life there, so seeing his work here feels rooted in the country's own story. His paintings hang alongside works by Pablo Picasso, and the two artists' approaches sit in quiet conversation across the rooms.
The museum sits in the center of Lucerne and is easy to reach on foot from most points in the city. All three floors can be visited in a single trip, and labels throughout help place the works in context.
The basement of the museum holds a large series of photographs taken by David Douglas Duncan showing Pablo Picasso in his everyday life at home and at work. These images offer a very personal view of the artist that goes far beyond what the painted works alone can show.
