Construction of the sanctuary began in 1595 on the site of a former oratory dedicated to Saint Bernardino of Siena, with consecration taking place in 1613.
The sanctuary holds the status of class A Swiss cultural property of national significance and contains a 15th-century Marian fresco in its second chapel.
Located at Salita alla Basilica in Morbio Inferiore, the sanctuary includes a modern wooden choir loft from 2001 that houses a Mascioni pipe organ.
The church stands where two young individuals experienced healing through a Marian apparition on July 29, 1594, leading to land donation by the Silva family.
