Parco delle Gole della Breggia, Geopark in Morbio Inferiore, Switzerland.
Parco delle Gole della Breggia is a geopark in Morbio Inferiore, Canton of Ticino, Switzerland, covering a wooded valley with limestone cliffs and a deep gorge carved by the river. The Breggia River has exposed rock layers over time, revealing different geological epochs from the Jurassic through to the Tertiary period.
The park was founded in 2001 to protect geological layers exposed by millions of years of erosion. Mills along the river operated until the mid-20th century, providing ground grain to nearby villages.
Ghitello Mill stands at the park entrance with its original millstones and wooden mechanisms still visible inside. The building now serves as an information center where visitors can learn about traditional grain and corn milling methods once common throughout southern Ticino.
Two marked trails run through the valley and connect old mills with viewpoints along the gorge. The paths include stairs and steep sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
More than 540 plant species grow in the park, including numerous orchids and rare Mediterranean plants. The climate here is influenced simultaneously by the nearby Alps and the Po Valley.
