Chiasso railway station, Border train station in Chiasso, Switzerland
Chiasso railway station is a border train station in the canton of Ticino, connecting Switzerland directly to Italy with platforms used for both passenger and freight services. The station building stands at the edge of the town, right at the point where the two countries meet.
The station opened on December 6, 1874, as part of the rail expansion linking northern Europe to the Mediterranean. Over the following decades it grew into one of the main crossing points on the southern side of the Alps for both goods and travelers.
The station sits right on the border, so travelers from Switzerland and Italy share the same platforms every day. The surrounding area reflects the mixed character of Chiasso, a town where Swiss and Italian habits naturally overlap.
The station has luggage storage, customs areas, and bus connections to the surrounding region, so it is easy to continue a journey from here. When entering Switzerland, border checks can occur, so it is worth arriving a little early to allow time for that.
The station is classified as a class B Swiss cultural property of regional importance, which means the building itself is protected. This is unusual for an active border station and makes it one of the few protected railway buildings of this type in the country.
