La Motta lido, Summer swimming facility in Fribourg, Switzerland.
La Motta is a swimming complex with two main pools, red-tiled roofs, and numerous sky-blue changing cubicles positioned against the Fribourg cityscape. The layout combines functional design with open sightlines that let you see the urban surroundings while swimming.
Built in 1923 by architects Frédéric Broillet and Augustin Genoud, the site began as a wash-house for workers. A 1940 Federal Court decision transformed it into a public bathing place accessible to everyone, setting a new standard for Swiss swimming facilities.
The site reflects a tradition of Swiss bathing culture that has evolved here for generations. You witness families and neighbors gathering in a shared public space that belongs to everyone in the community.
The facility opens from May through September, with entry permitted until 30 minutes before closing. On weekends and holidays, closing time is 6 PM, making it easy to plan your visit around these regular hours.
The pool water was originally sourced from the Sarine River flowing through the city. While swimming, you have a direct view of St. Nicholas Cathedral rising directly above the complex.
