Moab, Outdoor recreation center in Grand County, Utah, United States
Moab is a town in Grand County, Utah, that serves as a base for two national parks and sits along the Colorado River. The main street is lined with motels, outdoor gear shops, and cafés, while red rock formations in the distance are visible from the center of town.
The settlement was founded in 1878 and experienced a uranium mining boom in the 1950s that drew hundreds of workers. After mining ended, the town shifted to nature tourism starting in the 1980s.
The town draws climbers and cyclists who rent gear here and talk about their routes on restaurant patios. Many visitors arrive in spring and fall, when temperatures make hiking and exploring more comfortable.
The visitor center offers maps and advice on trails, campsites, and activities in the surrounding area. Most lodging and restaurants are located along the main street, where you can also buy supplies for day trips.
The town holds Dark Sky Community status, allowing visitors to observe stars and celestial objects at night without interference from artificial light. Some lodgings turn off their outdoor lighting late in the evening to preserve this visibility.
