Funicular Schwyz–Stoos, Funicular railway in Schwyz, Switzerland
The Funicular Schwyz–Stoos is a mountain railway in the Canton of Schwyz that links the valley floor near Schwyz to the car-free resort of Stoos. The system rises approximately 740 meters through alpine terrain, passing through three tunnels and crossing two bridges along its route.
Construction of the new railway began in 2012, replacing an older funicular that had operated since 1933. The modern system opened in December 2017 after five years of work and cost around 52 million Swiss francs.
The mountain village of Stoos maintains its traditional Swiss character with only 100 permanent residents and a complete absence of motor vehicles.
The railway operates daily with departures every half hour and can carry up to 1500 passengers per hour. Riders experience changing gradients during the journey while the cabin floors remain level throughout.
The railway holds the world record for the steepest funicular with a maximum gradient of 47.7 degrees. The barrel-shaped cabins rotate automatically during travel so passengers always stand on level flooring.
