Schwyz, Administrative capital in central Switzerland.

Schwyz is the cantonal capital in central Switzerland, nestled between Lake Lucerne and Lake Zürich in a valley beneath the distinctive Mythen mountains. The town spreads across gentle slopes with traditional buildings and well-kept public spaces that create the feel of a comfortable alpine settlement.

Schwyz gave its name to the entire country and played a central role in founding the confederation in 1291 alongside Uri and Unterwalden. This early alliance laid the foundation for what would eventually become the modern Swiss state.

The Federal Charter Museum holds key documents of Swiss history, including the 1291 founding charter. The town itself remains a living reminder of these foundational moments that shaped the nation.

The town has a compact center that is easy to explore on foot, and it is accessible by car or public transport. There is ample parking available and good access to local services for visitors.

The coat of arms of Schwyz, a white cross on a red background, inspired the design of the Swiss national flag. This symbol connects the town directly to the nation's identity in a way that few visitors realize.
