Hengdian World Studios, Film studio in Hengdian, China.
Hengdian World Studios is a film production site in Zhejiang Province that includes numerous outdoor bases and covered studio spaces. The facilities cover several square kilometers and offer reconstructed historical settings from different Chinese dynasties.
The site was created in 1996 with the construction of a replica street set for a historical film and grew in the following years with further reconstructions of imperial architecture. Since then, several themed areas have been added that represent different periods of Chinese history.
Film crews use the reconstructed imperial palaces and ancient streets as backdrops for historical productions, while visitors walk through the same sets and watch filming up close. The site feels like an inhabited time journey, with people in costumes moving between the buildings and bringing past eras to life.
Shuttle buses run between Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport and the studio site, or train connections are available through Yiwu Station. The sprawling outdoor areas require longer walks, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
The studio does not charge rent for the sets and instead finances itself through hotel stays, dining, and equipment rentals. This approach has made the site one of the most frequently used filming locations worldwide.
