Lufeng Formation, Geological formation in Yunnan, China
The Lufeng Formation is a geological layered sequence in Yunnan consisting of two main deposits: the lower Dull Purplish Beds and the upper Dark Red Beds, together exceeding 300 meters thick. This rock sequence spreads across several excavation sites in the Chuanjie Basin and displays different sedimentary patterns formed during distinct geological phases.
This formation developed between 201 and 183 million years ago during the Lower Jurassic period, when marine and continental sediments accumulated as the Tethys Sea underwent opening. The rock layers represent a time of significant change in regional depositional patterns and environmental conditions.
Scientists from multiple countries conduct research at the Lufeng Formation to study the extensive collection of early dinosaur fossils and prehistoric specimens.
The excavation sites are scattered across the region and require local knowledge or guidance to explore efficiently. Visitors should arrange information beforehand, as not all areas are easily accessible and some sites are managed by museums or research centers.
Fossils of Hadrocodium wui were discovered here, one of the oldest known mammals that lived alongside early dinosaurs. The site demonstrates how mammals already existed while dinosaurs were beginning to shape the land environment.
