Jinlong bridge, Suspension bridge in Gucheng District, China.
Jinlong Bridge is an iron chain suspension bridge that crosses the Jinsha River, connecting Yongsheng County with Gucheng District. The structure spans approximately 116 meters with a 3-meter-wide walkway, supported by iron ropes anchored into the cliff faces on both sides.
Built between 1876 and 1880 under the direction of prefect Jiang Zonghan during the Qing Dynasty, the bridge took five years to complete. This construction project improved regional connections significantly and represented a notable engineering achievement of that era.
This crossing served as a vital point on ancient trade routes that moved tea and horses between distant regions of Yunnan. Visitors today can appreciate how these historical trade pathways shaped the landscape and connections between communities.
Access is free and the bridge remains open year-round to pedestrians. It is located roughly 80 kilometers from Lijiang Old Town, and the crossing offers views over the river and surrounding canyon during the walk.
Sixteen iron ropes anchor the entire structure into the cliff faces, making it the oldest functioning bridge across this section of the Jinsha River. This sturdy construction method has allowed the structure to endure for more than a century.
