Dolores River Canyon

Dolores River Canyon is a deep gorge cut by the Dolores River, featuring steep walls of layered rock in warm colors. The geological formations reveal multiple time periods stacked vertically against each other.

The canyon was carved slowly over millions of years as water gradually wore away the rock layers. Different stone types from various geological epochs became exposed and stack visibly on top of each other.

Native American tribes, especially the Ute people, lived here for generations and shaped their way of life around this terrain. You can still see evidence of their presence scattered throughout the area today.

The location is accessible by car and provides several camping areas with basic facilities along the overlook. Visit during drier months as roads can become difficult in bad weather.

Hidden side canyons contain small pools of clear water surrounded by hanging ferns and greenery. These tucked-away spots also shelter a herd of bighorn sheep that have adapted to living in this harsh terrain.
