Our Lady of Sorrows Church, Romanesque church in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Our Lady of Sorrows Church is a Romanesque building in Las Vegas made from red sandstone with a cross-shaped layout. The structure spans multiple lots and features the architectural style typical of 19th-century religious construction in this part of New Mexico.
Construction began in 1852 under Father Joseph Failon and the interior work finished by 1885. The building rose during a period when New Mexico was shifting from Spanish colonial rule to American governance.
The building reflects Spanish Catholic traditions in its design and shows how the faith developed here over time through both local and imported practices.
The church sits along West National Avenue and is easy to reach on foot from downtown areas. Keep in mind that the building still serves as an active place of worship while being protected as a historic site.
The building was constructed from local red sandstone, a material native to the area that gives it a distinctive appearance found nowhere else nearby. This choice of material sets it apart from other churches in the region.
