Montgomery Ward Building, commercial building in Pueblo, Colorado
The Montgomery Ward Building is a two-story commercial structure in downtown Pueblo, Colorado, built in 1936 and reflecting Georgian Revival features. The structure features symmetrical windows, brick walls with limestone and granite details, large storefront windows on the ground floor, and a distinctive mansard roof with slate covering and small dormer windows.
The building was constructed in 1936 when Montgomery Ward Company expanded its retail presence, establishing standardized stores in Georgian Revival style between 1933 and 1948. The Pueblo store is the only one in Colorado that has preserved this particular design style in its original form, demonstrating the company's strategic expansion during the pre-World War II era.
The building carries the name of the founder Aaron Montgomery Ward and shows how a major retail company established its presence in American cities. The way it is used today, with offices instead of shops, reflects changes in retail and urban development.
The building is located on North Main Street in the downtown area and is easily accessible on foot, with its classical design standing out from modern surroundings. Access to the interior is available through the main entrance, where visitors can see original interior finishes including terrazzo floors and marble details.
The building is the only one in Colorado that preserves the original Georgian Revival design template used by Montgomery Ward Company, a style introduced by company leadership across many states between 1933 and 1948. This distinction makes it a valuable example of standardized retail architecture in twentieth-century America.
