Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site, Trading fort in Otero County, Colorado, United States
Bent's Old Fort is a reconstructed adobe structure measuring approximately 180 feet (55 meters) long by 135 feet (41 meters) wide, with walls about 15 feet (4.5 meters) high and 4 feet (1.2 meters) thick. The inner courtyard is surrounded by living quarters, storage rooms, and workshops that display how people worked and lived at this trading post.
The trading post was established in 1833 and shaped commerce along the Santa Fe Trail until 1849. It played an important role during the war between the United States and Mexico as a military staging point.
The trading post brought together merchants, trappers, and Native American groups who conducted business and exchanged goods in a shared space. People from different backgrounds worked and lived side by side at this frontier meeting place.
Visitors can explore the reconstructed building through self-guided tours and ranger-led programs to learn about 1840s frontier life. The site is best visited on cooler days, as the grounds are open and exposed to the sun throughout.
The site preserves a reconstruction using adobe made without modern materials, showing how pioneers built structures from available resources. Craftspeople continue to use traditional techniques today to maintain and repair the building.
