United States Penitentiary, Florence High, Federal maximum security prison in Fremont County, United States
United States Penitentiary Florence High is a federal maximum security prison in Fremont County, Colorado. The facility consists of several low concrete buildings separated by fencing, guard towers, and controlled passages.
The penitentiary opened in 1993 to hold male federal inmates who require higher security measures than standard facilities provide. It was built as part of the Federal Correctional Complex Florence, which groups several prisons of different security levels.
The facility carries the High designation for its security level below the nearby Supermax, housing inmates who require special monitoring. Visitors can see the outer fencing and white buildings from public roads, which sit within the larger prison complex.
The prison sits east of Florence and can be reached by public roads that surround the complex. Access for visitors is strictly limited, and approved visits require advance clearance and screening.
The facility has no windows to the outside in its cell blocks, removing natural orientation to the time of day. All doors are opened from central control rooms, so guards never handle door locks directly.
