Double Arch, Natural arch in Arches National Park, Utah, US.
Double Arch is a natural stone formation in Arches National Park made up of two connected openings side by side. The larger opening spans roughly 148 feet (45 meters) wide and reaches about 104 feet (32 meters) high.
The sandstone formed about 190 million years ago during the late Triassic and early Jurassic periods. Water erosion from above gradually sculpted it into the twin arches we see today.
The opening sequence of the film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade featured Double Arch, introducing this geological formation to audiences worldwide.
The trail to Double Arch is a short walk of about half a mile round trip from the parking area with minimal elevation change. Assistance may be arranged for visitors with mobility concerns.
Unlike most other arches in the park, Double Arch formed through water erosion from above rather than from the sides, creating what geologists call a pothole arch. This uncommon formation process makes it a rare example of this type in the region.
