Balanced Rock, Natural monolith in Arches National Park, Utah, United States
Balanced Rock is a monolith in Arches National Park consisting of a large boulder precariously balanced on a narrow sandstone pedestal. The entire structure rises above the flat desert floor, creating a striking outline against the sky.
The structure formed over millions of years through erosion and weathering of local sandstone. A companion formation near it collapsed during the winter of 1975-1976.
The formation draws photographers and artists who capture how its appearance shifts throughout the day and seasons. It has become a defining image for everyone who visits the park.
The site is best explored on a short paved path that loops around its base, offering views from multiple angles. The area is open and exposed to the elements, so visitors should prepare for sun and wind.
The upper portion weighs around 3,600 tons and rests on a point only a few meters wide. How it continues to stand puzzles many visitors who approach it.
