Evergreen, Mountain residential area in Jefferson County, Colorado
Evergreen is a mountain community in Jefferson County, Colorado, sitting at an elevation of roughly 2200 meters in the Rocky Mountains. The settlement spreads among forested slopes, with an artificial lake forming the center.
The first settlers arrived during the gold rush in the mid-19th century, as miners passed through the region. Loggers and ranchers later settled permanently, using the forests and pastures.
The name comes from the evergreen conifers that grow in the surrounding forests and stay green throughout the year. Local residents use the trails around the lake for walking dogs and jogging, especially in the early morning.
The high elevation brings strong temperature swings, with summers being warm and winters very cold. Visitors should prepare for sudden weather changes, as thunderstorms are common in summer.
A monument to the Colorado blue spruce stands here because this tree originated in the nearby mountains and became the official state tree. The lake freezes completely in winter and is then used for ice skating.
