The first settlement appeared in 1859 when John D. Henderson established a ranch and trading post here during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. The municipality developed into an industrial site with refineries and chemical plants during the 20th century.
The city takes its name from its founders' intention to create a trading center, reflected in the English word for business. Today the place is marked by large sports facilities and industrial areas that shape daily life.
The municipality sits along several major highways and can be reached by car from Denver in a short time. Housing costs here are lower than in surrounding Denver suburbs.
A national wildlife refuge sits within city limits and provides habitat for numerous native animal species. The land was formerly a restricted military area and later converted into a nature reserve.
