Denver International Airport, International airport in Denver, United States.
Denver International Airport covers roughly 13,570 hectares, making it the largest airport by land area in North America with five active runways. Three parallel terminal buildings connect through an underground train system and spread along a linear arrangement.
This airport replaced Stapleton International in 1995 after a construction project that began in 1989 and took several years to complete. The opening was delayed multiple times due to technical difficulties with the automated baggage system.
The terminal displays several permanent artworks, including a 9-meter-tall blue horse sculpture named Mustang along the entrance road. Travelers also encounter murals and installations that reflect the heritage of the American West and the Colorado landscape.
The facility serves more than 200 destinations through 133 gates spread across three concourses accessible by underground train. Travelers should allow extra time to move between concourses, as distances can be considerable.
The roof of the main building uses white fabric panels deliberately shaped to echo the snow-covered peaks of the nearby Rocky Mountains. In daylight, the tensioned membranes create soft, natural lighting inside the check-in hall.
