Our Lady of the Rockies, White statue on Continental Divide near Butte, Montana.
Our Lady of the Rockies is a white marble statue of Mary standing atop a mountain peak on the Continental Divide. The monument overlooks Butte and looks out across forests, rolling hills, and distant mountain ranges.
The monument was completed in 1985 after a local mining businessman pledged it following his wife's recovery from serious illness. The mining community of Butte contributed to its construction, making it a community project.
The monument honors Mary and is revered by local residents as a protective symbol. It reflects the region's deep religious tradition and draws people seeking contemplation in this remote mountain location.
Visitors can reach the monument by guided bus tour from the visitor center, offered during warmer months. The climb to the summit is steep, so wear good shoes and allow time to adjust to the altitude.
The statue was built in three separate sections that were helicoptered to the summit and assembled there. This remarkable feat of mountain engineering at that altitude was unprecedented at the time.
