Lake Chelan

Lake Chelan is a lake in Chelan County, Washington, stretching more than 50 miles (80 kilometers) through the North Cascade Mountains and reaching depths exceeding 1,400 feet (425 meters) in places. The water fills a narrow glacial valley between steep mountain slopes, with small towns and campgrounds dotted along both shores.

For thousands of years, Chelan tribes made their home along these waters before European settlers arrived in the late 19th century and founded the present-day town. In the early 20th century, a dam was built to create a reservoir, raising the original water level and shaping the form seen today.

Vineyards line the shores, where grapes grow in mineral-rich soil and produce wines that draw visitors from nearby cities. Many cellars open their doors for tastings, allowing guests to enjoy views over the water while they sample.

Access is by road or through the local airport, with hotels, vacation rentals, and campgrounds available along the shore. Boats and kayaks can be rented for getting out on the water, and hiking trails lead into the surrounding mountains.

At the northern end sits the remote settlement of Stehekin, reachable only by boat, seaplane, or hiking trail with no road connection to the rest of the country. A small number of residents live there year-round, receiving supplies by water and going about their daily routines in near isolation.
