Little Falls Hydroelectric Power Plant
The Little Falls Hydroelectric Power Plant is a water power facility in Washington built between 1907 and 1910 and located at a dam on the Spokane River. The main building shows Classical Revival architecture from the early 20th century and is surrounded by seven other structures across roughly 5 hectares of land.
The facility was built from 1907 to 1910 and was one of the first major hydroelectric plants of the Washington Water Power Company in the region. It marked a key step in providing electricity to industries, farms, and homes during the early era of electrification.
The facility shows the role of water power in the region's early industrial history. Visitors can see how engineers and workers harnessed the river's natural force to provide energy for growing communities.
The site is accessible by a short walk from the road and offers good views of the dam and old machinery from several vantage points. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes as the terrain is uneven and the water nearby sounds loud and powerful.
The plant used early low-head technology that was uncommon in the first large hydroelectric plants built at that time. This technology made it possible to generate power effectively even with smaller water drops.
