Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation, Native American reservation in Kootenai County, United States
The Coeur d'Alene Reservation spans 523 square miles across northwestern Idaho, including portions of Lake Coeur d'Alene and surrounding forests within its boundaries.
President Ulysses S. Grant established the reservation through an executive order in 1873, reducing the original tribal territory from 3.5 million acres to its current size.
The Schitsu'umsh people maintained settlements along waterways, developing specialized fishing techniques and establishing seasonal migration patterns throughout their ancestral lands.
The reservation houses multiple communities including Plummer, Harrison, and Worley, with the tribal council managing various enterprises that employ over 1000 individuals.
The United States Supreme Court confirmed tribal ownership rights to the lower third of Lake Coeur d'Alene in 2001, granting authority to establish water quality standards.
