Stanley Mitchell hut, Alpine shelter in Yoho National Park, Canada
Stanley Mitchell hut is a log cabin in Yoho National Park located at approximately 2,060 meters in Little Yoho Valley. It accommodates 24 guests during summer and 20 during winter with dormitory sleeping areas, propane stoves, and dining spaces.
The cabin was constructed in 1940 and named after the Alpine Club of Canada's Secretary-Treasurer Stanley Mitchell. It received Federal Heritage Building status in 1997.
Hans Gmoser operated ski touring expeditions from this base during the 1950s and 1960s, establishing it as a hub for mountain exploration. Today visitors gather here as a refuge point for those pursuing high-altitude adventures in the surrounding peaks.
Visitors need to bring sleeping bags and toilet paper as the facility provides only basic supplies. Access is on foot in summer or by snowshoes and skis during winter months.
The shelter serves as a base camp for summiting several notable peaks including The President, Vice President, and Mount McArthur. From this location mountaineers tackle these high-altitude objectives as challenging day climbs or multi-day expeditions.
